Why you need TRX
Every USDT transfer on Tron uses network resources — energy and bandwidth. If the wallet has none, they are paid for by burning TRX. With zero TRX the transfer simply fails, even if there is plenty of USDT.
What energy is
Energy is the resource spent on smart contract calls, and a USDT transfer is one. It can be obtained by staking TRX or rented from services; otherwise the wallet burns TRX to cover it.
How much a transfer costs
It depends on the current price of energy. Sending to an address that already holds USDT is cheaper; to a new address it costs roughly twice as much. Most wallets show the estimated fee before sending.
How to pay less
Keep a little TRX in the wallet, send larger amounts less often, or use another network such as BEP20 or TON if both sides support it — their fees are usually lower.
Sending to the guarantor
When you deposit in TRC20, the network fee comes from your wallet on top of the amount: send exactly the sum shown in the deal and make sure you have TRX. The fee for the guarantor's payout is shown before the deal.
